ICIAM Board Meeting & Workshop on Industrial and Applied Mathematics 2025

The ICIAM Board Meeting & Workshop on Industrial and Applied Mathematics 2025 took place from September 11 to 13, 2025, at the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics (VIASM), Hanoi. The event was jointly organized by the International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM), the Vietnam Mathematical Society (VMS), and VIASM. The conference consisted of two days of scientific sessions (September 11–12) and one day for the ICIAM Board Meeting (September 13), with the participation of around 70 delegates from Vietnam and abroad, representing five continents including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and others.

The conference aimed to create a high-level academic forum for international leading mathematicians to exchange ideas with the Vietnamese mathematical community on applications of mathematics. At the same time, the event sought to highlight Vietnam’s growing role and contributions to the global mathematical community, especially in applied and industrial mathematics. Through this platform, the conference contributed to promoting international cooperation, expanding research networks, and showcasing Vietnam’s potential and needs in the development of applied mathematics.

Prof. Carol Woodward gave a lecture on high-performance computing (HPC) and large-scale simulation software, highlighting the strong link between applied mathematics and computer science.

In addition to the talks, the conference featured lively discussion sessions and academic exchanges, fostering connections between Vietnamese research groups and their international counterparts. It provided a valuable opportunity for young scientists, PhD students, and university lecturers in Vietnam to access new research directions and explore long-term collaborations with foreign partners.

As part of the Conference, on September 13, the ICIAM Board Meeting was held and elected the new ICIAM President: Prof. Sven Leyffer (Argonne National Laboratory, USA). In addition, the meeting selected Busan, South Korea, as the host city for the ICIAM meeting in 2031.

On this occasion, in the afternoon of September 12, Deputy Minister of Education and Training of Vietnam Nguyễn Văn Phúc, together with representatives from relevant Departments, paid a courtesy reception to Prof. Hiraku Nakajima, President of the International Mathematical Union (IMU), University of Tokyo (Japan); Prof. Yukari Ito, President of the Asian–Oceanian Women in Mathematics Association, University of Tokyo (Japan); and Prof. Wil Schilders, President of the International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM), Eindhoven University of Technology (the Netherlands).

During the meeting, the Deputy Minister expressed his wish to sign memoranda of understanding to expand opportunities for scientific research and to create favorable conditions for Vietnamese postgraduate students to participate in exchange programs and advanced training. The Professors, in turn, expressed their hope for stronger collaboration with Vietnamese mathematicians and scientists and affirmed their readiness to cooperate and exchange in line with the Deputy Minister’s proposal.
